Bye bye bebo!

One of our favorite books to read our boys is The Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton. At the end of the book, the baby hippo says goodbye to his belly button when it gets covered up by clothes.

On January 22, Andrew said goodbye to the belly button that he has known since birth. He has had an umbilical hernia that we had hoped would close itself like Jeremiah's had. In November his pediatrician told us it was time for surgery. We arrived at the hospital at about 8:30 that morning and he was taken to a surgery prep room pretty quickly. The nurse gave him some happy juice in liquid form. He snuggled his doggy blanket from home and we had a few laughs watching him become a little loopy. Mom and Dad needed that, because they were nervous. The nurse took him to the OR around 10 and then the doctor came to talk to mom and dad a bit before 11. All had gone well. He put some stitches inside that will dissolve and then stitched up the incision.  We waited a bit longer and then were able to go back to recovery to see him. He was quick to request a snack and apple juice from the nurse (no food after midnight!). We were able to leave the hospital a little after noon. Grandma and Grandpa Schnitzler were waiting for us at home.

Andrew did experience quite a bit of pain. Aunt Sheila came to visit and help take care of him. This worked out because Jeremiah also ended up with a snow day on Thursday.

He was back to himself in a few days and was excited to tell people and show them his bandage.
